MRIO - Miscellaneous Maps of the Survey of India (1742-1872)
In 1954 and 1955 the Survey of India shipped to the National Archives of India, for preservation and display, a large collection of old maps for which the Survey had no further use. Some of these maps were sourced from the MRIO (Map Record and Issue Office) of the Survey. These MRIO maps were catalogued, and in 1982 the National Archives issued a mimeographed document Catalogue of the MRIO - Miscellaneous Maps of the Survey of India (1742-1872). This catalogue is the first item in the list of files below, and serves as a guide to the map files which follow. The catalogue includes three main sections: 1) Catalogue of the MRIO - Miscellaneous Maps; 2) Biographical Sketches of the Surveyors; and 3) Cartographic Notes. These maps cover a wide variety of topics and geographical area, from city plans to district maps, from military route maps to geographic and national boundaries, and from rough area surveys to fortress plans. The original maps are archived and available for viewing at the National Archives of India, New Delhi.
